FEMMEmphis is an artist collective whose mission is to empower and promote female, female-presenting, and gender-queer artistic voices in the Memphis community. The organization was created in response to being frustrated with the lack of opportunities for womyn in the local theater community. Just last year, less than 6% of productions by the seven major companies of Memphis were written by a female playwright, while less than 7% had female directors.
The goal of the mark was to represent theater and the word “femme” without being overtly or exclusively feminine. I chose to depict these ideas with lips in the shape of the popular red curtains of a theater. Both FEMMEmphis and myself feel passionate about creating a stronghold of support for all womyn to be able to tell their stories.
